Falcarragh Winter Jazz Festival

After an amazing debut for the Falcarragh Winter Jazz Festival in 2018, which featured internationally renowned guitarist Jesse Van Ruller, and MOBO-nominated jazz artist David Lyttle. Falcarragh Winter Jazz Festival, described as a “boutique festival of singular identity” in All About Jazz, are excited to present the 2019 lineup, which will again feature some of the most incredible and exciting international and Irish jazz artists today.

On Friday the 6th we feature renowned UK vocalist, Cleveland Watkiss.

His amazing vocal experiences have seen him perform with some of the world’s most celebrated artists and groups, from Jazz legends Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson and Art Blakey, Classical orchestras such as London Chamber Orchestra and the Dusseldorf Symphony Orchestra through to modern music icons Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder.

The Guardian Jazz Best Vocalist Award winner, and MOBO Nominee, will be opening the FWJF with his acclaimed VocalSuite in the Gweedore Bar . To book tickets in advance online you can visit https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/cleveland-watkiss-vocalsuite-tickets-73550061213 and buy tickets there.

Lucian Gray, one of the most acclaimed guitarists in Canada, is the second headline act of the FWJF, and will be performing in the Gweedore Bar on Saturday the 7th.

A virtuosic young guitarist, known for his relaxed feel and commanding sound, coming from a deep respect for the jazz tradition, since being awarded the Slaight Scholarship in 2008 to attend Berklee College of Music, has become one of the rising stars of jazz guitar, winning the Rising Young Star at the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival in 2009, and in 2015, being selected as one of the 5 finalists of the We Montgomery International Jazz Guitar Competition. After a busy year including a 27 date tour of Ireland, tours in Finland, Russia, and the Middle East as well as upcoming tours of Australia and Scotland, we are excited to have David’s trio perform at the FWJF 2019.

Steve Hamilton, one of the most acclaimed pianists in Europe, will perform a special solo performance as part of the FWJF.

Steve grew up in a musical family with (guitarist) father Laurie, a constant source of inspiration & invaluable musical information. After much encouragement & tuition/guidance from saxophonist Tommy Smith, he won a scholarship to study Jazz at Berklee College of Music in 1991 – in addition to being a recipient of the Pat Smythe award, Steve’s studies at Berklee were generously subsidised by rock icon Phil Collins.

Since 1995 he has performed/recorded with such notable musicians as: Freddie Hubbard, Ray Charles, Pee Wee Ellis Assembly, Joe Lovano, Kurt Elling, John Scofield, Gary Burton, Van Morrison, Tommy Smith and many more.

Since 2013, Steve has been touring and recording as keyboard player with legendary drummer Billy Cobham’s Band.

Also featuring at the festival this year are some of the rising stars of the Irish Jazz scene, the Murray Brothers, Conor and Micheal Murray, Derry born guitarist Joseph Leighton and double bassist Jack Charles Kelly.
